Interesting fact about the Young Marines Birthday
click to Visit the Marine Corps Museum website
Mr. Kessler, Director of Young Marines

This year we discovered something very interesting about the history of our organization. We had previously thought that our program began in 1958 when a few Marines wanted to give something back to their community. In fact it was in 1959 that those same Marines began what would become the Young Marines of the Marine Corps League. How do we know this? Simple. We found the very first Young Marine and the newspaper article that covered the first registration period. Mr. Robert Lachance was that young nine-year-old in 1959 who signed up to be a Young Marine. We are glad to have him back in the family. He currently works at the National Museum of the Marine Corps as the Bar Keeper of Tun Tavern.
